Mark Saltzman wrote the CBS television production "Mrs. Santa Claus" starring Angela Lansbury with songs by Jerry Herman. For the movies, he wrote "The Adventures of Milo and Otis" and screenplays for Disney and Tri-Star. In New York theater, he was a co-writer of the musical revue A...MY NAME IS ALICE and as a musical composer, scored several plays at the Soho Rep. For many years he wrote songs and scripts for "Sesame Street" where he earned seven Emmy Awards. THE TIN PAN ALLEY RAG, which received an L.A. Ovation Award nomination for Best Musical, is Mr. Saltzman's first full-length work for the stage. Dr. Robert Brosh, Adjunct Assistant Professor at the University of the Arts, will host the evening. Dr. Brosh, a jazz percussionist, teaches a course in American Music History at the University and has lectured extensively in and around Philadelphia. He has a keen interest in ragtime music as it informs many of today's musical genres. Accompanying Dr. Brosh will be pianist Neil Shah, a student of Brosh's at the University. Shah has an extensive background in ragtime piano. Shah and Brosh, while providing an interactive and educational history of ragtime music and the "Tin Pan Alley," will treat the audience to some of America's most popular ragtime compositions. Musical selections from THE TIN PAN ALLEY RAG may include works such as "The Maple Leaf Rag," "The Entertainer" and "Alexander's Ragtime Band." Following this musical journey through the ragtime era, author Mark Saltzman will join the duo for a conversation with the audience about the Wilma's Philadelphia Premiere of THE TIN PAN ALLEY RAG. THE TIN PAN ALLEY RAG is a musical play about Irving Berlin and Scott Joplin. The story chronicles the meeting of these two musical giants of the 20th century in New York City in 1915 when 28th Street was known as "Tin Pan Alley," the music publishing capital of the world. The Wilma Theater will present THE TIN PAN ALLEY RAG, November 10 through December 12, 1999.
