Program 2: Illusions of Space

Founded in 1968, Group Motion pioneered what was originally known as “multi-media dance/theater.”  Performing Rondo, a collaboration with Tokyo’s Leni-Basso Dance Company and choreographed by Akiko Kitamura, the company explores the interplay between the three-dimensional space of the dance and the two-dimensional space of live and pre-recorded video.  With Silvana Cardell’s Machinas Simples, the dancers draw inspiration from basic mechanics applied to dance and portray the experience of movement in restricted spaces, resulting in a “hypnotic effect” (The Philadelphia Inquirer).
