An Audio production of ‘Is God Is’

By Aleshea Harris
Directed by James Ijames

July 23–26, 2020

In the Spring, the pandemic forced us to cancel our stage production of ‘Is God Is.’ We remained committed to this story, and these artists. We’re proud that we found a way to share this story with you as an audio play in July 2020!

A THRILLING STORY OF REVENGE

Twin sisters go on a rip-roaring, cross-country adventure – from an Eastern metropolis to the deep South to the California desert – to exact righteous revenge. This fiercely modern new play combines the Spaghetti Western, hip-hop, Afropunk, and Old Testament justice for a thrilling listening experience.

From WHYY: With the stage off limits, Wilma Theater tries something new: a radio play

From the Philadelphia Inquirer: Wilma Theater is putting on the acclaimed ‘Is God Is’ as an audio play, recorded from quarantine

“I think the use of genre (western, revenge tragedy) is beautifully married to an Afrofuturist aesthetic that I’m hungry for in the theater. This play is not concerned about being judged or being respectable. Its main concern is with being ruthlessly honest.” -Director James Ijames

KNOW BEFORE YOU LISTEN

“To me the play is about the things we inherit, the good the bad and the ugly, and what we do with that inheritance. Because this play’s content deals with cycles of violence in families and domestic violence, it is important to say that we have not shied away from the violence of the play and the sound design and performances are realistic.” -Director James Ijames
